Re: The Politics Thread 2017
You have answered your own question. The tax system should have 0 bearing on whether one chooses to work more or less. The employment / work market and our own lives should dictate that. The tax system does that now. The Tax system has no bearing on how much you work. Various welfare incentives mig...

If a plumber works 7 days a week, he should have 3.5 times the wealth from that year as one who works 2 days. He may have a **** family life, relationships and everything else because he is so develoted to his craft. But the govt and some other policy hack shouldn’t be taking so much from him to mi...

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I note Roy Masters wrote this morning that the Broncos third party deals now exceed the entire rest of the NRLs combined. Shows what we are up against to sign the top tier talents. And despite this they still have not won a premiership since TPA’s were introduced. Maybe so, but that's more a reflec...

Re: The Politics Thread 2017
I'm not going to pretend I know the answers believe a key component of the Henry Tax Review was to broaden the scope of the GST. At at high level it does make sense to tax spending rather than saving. Those that have more money generally spend more money and the more you spend the more tax you are ...

Re: The Politics Thread 2017
I'm talking about reducing your taxable income by writing off losses from an investment. Then (for that financial year) you are paying less than your "fair share" to balance the books and be budget neutral as Papa bear is trying to do. And yes you pay tax on any profit you realise from th...

Re: The Politics Thread 2017
But thats my point, you have more avenues to "minimalise" your tax. So if you went to a flat rate of tax, you'd be better placed to minimalise, and the lower brackets wont... so they'd be paying more than their "fair" share as a proportion of their income for that financial year...

I do have a mate thats all over this sort of thing... but it's way over my head... We're not. I'm severely unmotivated to be at work today, have a distractingly wet and sticky crotch, and am lobbing grenades up at anyone who I think might respond to me. Well every day at work is unmotivating for me, so if you ever want to not argue but argue about something, I'm usually up for it...

Hey, on the whole trust thing, I run trusts as the distributive entity for my holding companies, but I can't for the life of me see how they can seriously avoid tax. Re: The Politics Thread 2017
I can help with that. My argument is that the current tax system is flawed and inequitable, and that as a country we should have a social contract in which all people contribute to the whole, within their means and no matter how modestly, because any system wherein 20% contribute 100% by definition...

Not really. The government would prefer that she stays on the couch, short term. The increase in outgoings to cover your childcare won't be covered by an increase in her tax. Thats a short term view though... balancing the books in the here and now. And thats also assuming that after 5 years "...

People still do things even though there is a disincentive, they just do them less. Take drinking alcohol for example, it kills your brain cells, a large disincentive, people still do it. The cost of child care is determined by a market where give or take half of your child care fees are paid by th...

Re: The Politics Thread 2017
The whole premise of our tax system disincentivising people from working is bollocks if you ask me. Think about it, no one would want a pay rise if that was the case. Our tax system (while not perfect) encourages people to aspire to earn more because although they may pay more in tax, they still ear...

Ok, I am not sure if you are making this point out of spite because of how our house conversation went down. But to me, it is a weak argument. If they are taxed at the same rate it is equal, 60k is 30% of that persons income just as 18k is 30% of the other persons income. To be honest the only way ...

Just to clarify the old system you got 50% regardless of what you were on. Plus the Child care benefit which I have never been eligible for so I can not comment. Now if you are below 65K combined you get 85% back, and over 350,000 you get 0% back. With $250,000 being the 50% cap. Keep in mind they ...
