Re: Jack Wighton turns down Raiders option to go on open market for 2021

Wighton at a million dollars is a gamble that I think will pay off. But it's a gamble. He isn't an origin half. And let's face it he isn't in the centre ranks either (which is kinda beside the point anyway). He has a lot more to prove. I think he can do it and is worth the gamble. Do I think there ...

Re: 2019 in review - Jack Wighton

I think we have a Premiership window. If we let Wighton walk over the matter of 200k we put that window on hold, and we probably end up spending more or gamble (ala Orford) trying to replace him. The team isn't getting any younger so he's a must keep. No doubt there is a premiership window, but wou...

Re: Jack Wighton turns down Raiders option to go on open market for 2021

Only Tedesco and Trbojevic are genuine $1m players on that list, maybe Taumalolo. The rest aren't delivering value. I’d have Taumololo ahead of Trbojevic to be honest but agree there are a lot of overpaid under performers on that list. I thought Mulholand’s comments about Hodgo’s value were well ma...

Re: 2019 in review - Jack Wighton

Out of curiosity - how are missed tackles calculated and attributed on a team and individual basis? If I add up all the individual average missed tackles per game it would be a number that makes us look like the worst defensive team in the comp which isn’t the case. If Teddy slices between Papa and ...

Yep happy with 8 and could have been convinced 8.5. He’s not worth $1m though. A real test for DFJ here... So if you let him walk who do you replace him with? If you’re opening up $1m in cap space we have options. This year Jack was good at 6 but we struggled at 7 most the season and only missed ou...

Re: Jack Wighton turns down Raiders option to go on open market for 2021

Like everything footy is a business and I’d never expect a player to put club loyalty over his ability to maximise profits from his career. I do think there are ways you go about it though and I’m not totally comfortable with how Jack and Bateman have been playing their cards. I fully expect both to...

That’s true - good luck to him if he gets a million elsewhere but I’d be very disappointed if the raiders forked out that much for him.

Re: Canberra Raiders forward John Bateman nominated for Golden Boot

Interesting the ratio of forwards to backs in the nominated players. My initial thoughts were that it should be over the season and not just internationals, but Edwahu is right, it would just become an NRL award. On international form I agree with Nick that it has to go to a Tongan. Teukaiaho would ...

Re: 2019 in review - Joey Leilua

I gave Toots a 7.0, so by that measure Leilua would be around a 6.5. The tale of two seasons for BJ. As NR said, he was killing it early - then he got all injured and suspended and ****, but then managed to ramp it up a bit for the Grand Final run. Far from his best season. If we had vintage Leilua...

I wouldn’t think you need to be an evil mastermind to get around the cap/TPA arrangements. I see it was announced yesterday that Cronk is taking up a coaching role with GWS Giants next year. While I have no reason to think it’s in anyway dodgy, how would anyone know if the deal was agreed and funded...

Re: 2019 in review - Jarrod Croker

One of Croker's biggest issues is being caught flat footed and fixated on ball runners, doubling up with his inside man when it's equal numbers on sweep plays. The South Prelim was a classic example - a play being run down his side where it's three on three, and instead of staying with his man, he ...

Re: 2019 in review - Jarrod Croker

His GF performance was sensational. Joepsh Manu was giving people the business all finals, he was the form centre in the comp, and Croker shut him down. I think his GF performance was one of his best ever tbh. A real shame he didnt get to lift the trophy for us. That cover tackle on the wrong side ...

I think his season was adversely impacted by the move to centre and suspension, and that's inspite of the fact i think he flashed truly dominant play there... just a season that felt disjointed. Winner of the 9s plays winner of the 13s in the Super Grand Final 11 a side and bonus zone tries are worth 4.5? That's stupid. 9s team plays with 9, 13 plays with 13. 9s get bonus tries and have to drop-kick their conversions, 13s don't. The off-season is obviously treating you well Nick. I got qui...

Everyone saying that Tapine should be on the edge is forgetting one key factor - his lateral defence is poor compared to Bateman. Taps was caught out numerous times in 2018. If we make this change, our right side defence will be: Tapine - G Williams - Leilua If that doesn't spell recipe for disaste...

Re: Joey Leilua guarantees he'll be with Raiders in 2020

I think he'll eventually move there permanently at some point in his caree given his size, lack of pace, and defensive ability. Now's just not the time considering he's playing for NSW and Aus from where he is. I’d agree with that - if he’s happy on the wing and we’re happy with our centres then no...

Havilli is a better middle player than Lui.
Had a decent 2018 Lui, but hasn't been great for a while now.
At times I wish both of them would trade their hands in for a stickier set of fingers but I’d be picking Lui ahead of Havilli.

Havilli is the best back up 9 we have at this stage but I’d love to see someone take the title off him this year. He’s solid but he has errors in him and doesn’t provide huge spark when he comes on. I’d imagine the club is very keen to keep Wighton and Bateman and their management are both pushing stores about potential moves away from the raiders.
