Re: Expectations for George Williams

As I said in another thread - all he has to do, at least initially, is make his tackles and ensure his mid/short kicking game is accurate. The other stuff will come over time, but those two are essential right away.

Re: Canberra Raiders offering Jack Wighton close to $3 million

I don’t think 900K is unreasonable - though as a general point, it’s not a good idea to compare value based on bad deals other clubs made (such as Ben Hunt or Ash Taylor). We are lucky he is one of our juniors. Trying to get him over from another club would cost us 1m +, you would think. I hope Jack...

Re: I think we're close, is 2020 our year ?

I worry about our ability to win close games as I think George Williams will take a little time to get used to the NRL - if we are all tied with the ball in the opposition 20 with no time left - who is taking the field goal? This year it was Sezer/Sam Williams, I am not sure whether George Williams ...

Re: Raiders half Aidan Sezer joins Huddersfield Giants on two year deal

It is virtually impossible in Rugby League for a halfback to have "little to no" impact on the success of a team that has made it to a Grand Final. The club opted for George Williams before the run to the Grand Final. Do you really think if 2019 had happened in 2018, Williams would have been signed?...

Re: Canberra Raiders close in on major signing coup with Melbourne Storm centre Curtis Scott

Jesus, I think a lot of you are completely missing the fact the Storm were just the most dominant minor premiers in history. If Tapine doesn’t knock that ball out of Addo-Carr’s hands they very nearly come close to winning the comp again. It was a very, very good season, despite the fact they didn’...

Re: 2019 in review - John Bateman

I still say it’s the best debut season ever from a Raider - and that’s saying something given the quality of players we have had at the club. The thing about him is - he can play any style of game. If it becomes a down and dirty grind, he is comfortable slogging. If it becomes a points shoot out, he...

Good player, think he has a decent future if he can get his attitude right. Depends how much we will pay him, but I suspect it won’t be overs for 2020 at least.

James Roby has continually and consistently out played Josh Hodgson at international level. That suggestion that Roby is the second best hooker of this generation isn’t as silly as it sounds imo. It is a lot easier to look good coming off the bench fresh when opposition forwards are tired. Ah I gue...

Clearly after the first game against Tonga, Hodgson was told to give ball to his halves and stay out of the way. Awful tactics when the halves are Jackson Hastings and an out of form Widdop. Hodgson needs to stop giving his out of sorts halves the ball and dictate through the ruck. Hastings is absolute crap, and Widdop is out of form.

One of my favourite players to watch. Plenty of heart and natural talent, too. Made those around him (particularly Leilua) better players and seemed to be amazing for club culture. Will go down as a club great.

Re: Canberra Raiders 2020 NRL draw

The tough middle section has the benefit of plenty of off time for the majority of the squad - a bye and 2 week rest before the second Roosters game. I think it is a pretty decent draw overall - however, like 2019, we need to start fast and not make the mistake of 2017, where all the talk was conser...

Re: Canberra Raiders sign Wigan Warriors half George Williams on three year deal

At this stage, I would be going down the old “Craig Bellamy” school of thought for Williams - focus on defence and kicking (short/mid range). We made a Grand Final this year without dominant playmaking in the halves - not saying he can’t (and shouldn’t) develop this to improve us, but to start with,...

Re: Canberra Raiders prepared to let grand final centre Joey Leilua walk

BJ is a great player for a team outside of the 8/at the bottom of the 8 - his style of play means variability which is good for a weaker team. It is not so good for a stronger team expected to beat others, where his variability is more of a cost than a benefit. If we can bring in and develop a young...

A tough one. A big part of this is the availability of said player - by that I mean, if we are comparing to (say) Keary, how likely would it be that Keary would actually go the club in question? In our case, slim to none. You have to bring in the chance of landing the player into the equiation. Wigh...

I don't for a second think the officials were out to get us, or there is any conspiracy or anything. They reffed the game in front of them. The fact that Guler had arguably his best game to date playing 20 minutes in a GF is a very, very promising sign for what his future holds. I don't know why, but I am not disappointed at all with the Grand Final. We were 3.40 outsiders, and outplayed the best team in the modern era on the biggest stage of all with a relatively young team. We lost that game due to bad luck, but with 10 minutes left, we were the favourites to win that gam...

What a day for the true believers. Most “experts” have us losing by more than 2 tries. If we play to the best of our ability, I have no doubt it will be close. Mark Geyer on Triple M yesterday did his version of “Matt’s Matchups” with the Raiders coming out on top. Some very dubious ones like Wighton over Keary. If they score more than 2 tries, it’s all over. The Roosters have conceded bugger all points in their last 5 finals games - we might be able to jag a couple of tries with some Hodgson, Papalii, Wighton, or Bateman magic but I can’t see us scoring more than 14 points. Hope I am wrong.
