Re: 2019 NRL Round 23 - Teams and Game Day

You don’t need to support the Broncos. If we win against Manly now, it all but assures us of a Top 4 spot, as we will be 4 points clear of Manly and Parra with a superior F/A, with 2 games left.

John Bateman is 12 of 15 this year, and 80 per cent win rate.

Tom Trbojevic is 9 or 10, a 90 per cent win rate.
I thought Bateman has had 4 losses:

* Melbourne at home,
* Manly away,
* Eels away,
* Roosters at home.

Re: 2019 Rd 23 V Sea Eagles: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*

Similar to the Storm, there is a reasonable drop off between their starting forwards to their bench forwards. If we can control their starting front row, I am confident that Horsburgh, Lui and Young can do a job off the bench over theirs. Fonua-Blake does long minutes in his first stint - it might b...

Re: 2019 Rd 22 V Storm: Game Day

Every team engages in grubby behaviour and ours is no different - just in the last two games we had Rapana flying in with a dog shot in Mitchell, Bateman wrestling with Smith in the background of the play and giving him a facial when he had the ball, and something that went unnoticed - Hodgson telli...

Re: 2019 Rd 22 V Storm: Game Day

Best win since the 90s, for sure. To be down 18-0 against the Storm, away from home, having played a quarter of the game with 12 men. Incredible. The Rapana try was a thing of beauty. BJ’s decoy, Bateman and CNK passing. Beautiful. Before the game we said we had to spread the ball and attack the edg...

Re: 2019 Rd 22 V Storm: Game Day

I think they are heavy favourites, but we can give ourselves a good chance if we start well and play reasonably expansive. They are missing Smith and Welch from their bench, which gives us a very slight edge with our bench forwards. As others have mentioned, spinning the ball wide to attack them on ...

Re: 2019 Rd 22 V Storm: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*

If our starting pack can make theirs, I think our bench forwards might be a little stronger since they lost Welch. Starting well is so important - once they are ahead they are very hard to catch, as their style of play is very suited to being in front. Their left side attack is scintillating - they ...

Re: 2019 Rd 22 V Storm: Teams and Previews

I agree with Gould, except for the out of form part. We beat the Panthers on the end of a 7 match winning streak. The teams around us have lost games they should have won, there is no shame in beating the teams you are expected to. In saying that, I don’t think “peak for peak” we can match the Roost...

Some random thoughts: * I actually did not think the game was particularly high quality. Too many mistakes from both sides, and the Roosters clearly had a spoiling game plan. The fact that Robinson went out of his way to play mind games before the match is testament to how far the Raiders have come....

Re: 2019 Rd 21 V Roosters: Game Day

Pigman - the tactic is to get your player off for the HIA when the opposition have the ball and some momentum (rather than when you have the ball). Kent mentioned this on 360 the other week. It is a definite ploy. Refs have affected both sides equally, they have been dreadful. I am not sure about ta...

Re: 2019 Rd 21 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*

It’s a good chance to win tomorrow with the players they have missing. Again, target Verrils for some quick play the balls and then look at Bateman, Cotric and CNK sweeping right. Defensively need the inside to work really hard as they love an out/in play, not to mention Tedesco who breaks tackles e...

If you watch the tries that Jarrod has scored for the Raiders, you will see it all - great footwork, leaping for bombs, running through for grubbers, surprising strength/fend and speed. Also very good at setting up his outside man. He really is an extremely underrated attacking player. He has come u...

I think we can get some joy and quick play the balls attacking the Roosters down the middle and targeting Verrils, then shift to the right and throw some different shapes at Mitchell. He is still (like most young centres) dodgy with his decision making, Bateman and Cotric with CNK out the back shoul...

Still think it is a good signing. Given Stuart was able to get some pretty good output from Dave Taylor, I am somewhat hopeful he can reign in Hetherington’s poor discipline. I seem to remember he was sin binned twice in the same game for Penrith, but could be wrong. Plenty of potentially good forwa...

Yes, this whole Havili conversation needs to stop now. He is obviously an extremely valuable and versatile player, perfectly suited to the bench when you have back rowers who can play 80. One point I would like to make - if Hodgson ever has to move into the halves due to an injury (though I would pr...

Whoever plays the “Havili role” off the bench will get around 20 minutes a game. How much better will it be to have someone like Young in that role given you lose the injury cover Havili provides? I don’t think the benefit is worth the risk. Why is that? Serious question. With a tough run ahead of ...

Hodgson was absolute class. The great thing about his play is he is better off a quick play the ball but doesn’t actually need one - he is effective off slow play the balls too. His service out of dummy half - just incredible. Hits 20m left to right spirals just in front of the playmakers. It means ...

Agreed - Guler has a good chance of being a gun. Has all the attributes. I think it will be hard to hold onto him, Horsburgh and Young as they get more experience but between them we have some very solid young forwards. I actually like what I saw of Murchie in junior grades too but for whatever reas...

Havili doesn't need a rest. He's had stints of 22mins, 23mins and 17mins in the last 3 rounds. The others I agree could do with a rest but after the warriors we've got a 9 day turn around with a home game. It's possible for us to manage our way through that if that's the route we choose. I can’t heap more praise on Michael Oldfield as a signing and player for this club. Really good rugby league player. Couldn’t agree more. I keep stats on my computer, but can't find player 2018 numbers. His 2017 numbers include 6 try causes, 7 line break causes 1.4 missed tackles per game for a tackle efficiency of 88%. For comparison, Shannon Boyd in 2017 (with a few more minutes on average) had 90% tackle efficiency, 5 try causes an...

Have to agree with the above. Luke Bateman is an OK signing at minimum wage. I seem to remember a story last year of him being disappointed with his offer and wanting to “prove his worth” this year. I feel like the game has passed players like him and Shaun Fensom by, the “hard working toiler” lock ...

We looked tired in that second half of the Tigers game.
