Last week the Raiders still had a "mathematical" chance at making the finals. Not any more.
It is almost impossible to believe, but yet again, the Raiders led at home, late in the game... and conceded the match. Round 23, playing at home, needing to win four games in a row to make the finals. Result: Sea Eagles won by two, 26-24, through a try in the last two minutes.
The Raiders have lost this year by two points or less five times, by four points or less six times. It could have been six losses by two points or less, if the Bulldogs had not scored a try on the bell, producing a seven point loss for the Raiders.
That is 10, 12, 14 competition points lost in close matches. Even if the Raiders had won half of those games, Canberra would be in the top eight. In fact, not too far from the top four.
The 2015 Raiders now have the ignominy of having the worst home record of any Canberra team in history. Only two wins at home this season, with one home match remaining. They are a much better team than that suggests. But that's what has happened. The team did not have the composure, the mental strength, to win in the tight situations.
The sad thing for Canberra was that the team produced a good comeback in Round 23. The Sea Eagles led 16-0, but by half time, the Raiders had clawed back half of that lead. And then in the second half, they held on, grabbed the momentum, and went to a 24-16 lead. But ridiculous passes, fifth tackle penalties, saw the Sea Eagles score twice in the final 10 minutes to take the match. We now know the final, winning, try for Manly was illegal. But it is cold comfort.
2015 Round 23 Canberra Raiders V Manly Sea Eagles
Such is the closeness of the competition, one week the Raiders are playing for a top eight spot, now they are playing to avoid the wooden spoon. The Raiders are just two points away from the team in last place, the Titans. And they are the team Canberra faces next, on the Gold Coast.
Canberra's Jordan Rapana has been suspended for two weeks for a shoulder charge. Many are questioning the severity of suspensions for this offence as a result of the NRL's recent crack down. It seems tough, given the nature of the incident. With Rapana unavailable, Sisa Waqa moves to the wing, with Joey Leilua returning from suspension in the centres. Luke Bateman comes onto the bench with Mitch Barnett being dropped to Mounties after his first two NRL matches. That is a move from Raiders' coach Ricky Stuart that has surprised many Raiders fans, given how well Barnett has performed. Jarrad Kennedy starts in the back row.
The Titans have lost Canberra's 2016 recruit, Aidan Sezer, to a shoulder injury. Former Raiders coach, and current Titan's mentor, Neil Henry has selected Daniel Mortimer at halfback. Beau Falloon moves to hooker and Kierran Moseley comes onto the bench. Ryan James and Nate Myles return for the Titans in the forwards.
Late changes: No late changes expected for Canberra at this stage.
Matt's Match-ups: Click here
History: The Raiders have a relatively poor record against the Gold Coast Titans, having won just seven of 16 matches between the clubs, and four of the last 10. Of course, if the record against the Gold Coast's previous incarnations are included, things look a bit better for Canberra, with the Green Machine having won 15 of those 17 clashes. It was a big 56-16 win for the Raiders in their last start against the Titans in Round 9 of this year at Canberra Stadium. In 2014 it was one win apiece.
2014 Round 3 Canberra Raiders V Gold Coast Titans
2014 Round 18 Canberra Raiders V Gold Coast Titans
Canberra's record at Robina is not too flash, with the Green Machine having won just two of the seven matches against the Titans at the venue. The last win on the Coast was the 36-20 win in round 18 of 2014.
Form: The Raiders are on a LWLLL form line in their last five appearances. The Titans are not faring any better with a LLWLL record, probably worse. The Titans lost 36-14 in their last start, against the Bulldogs. In those four most recent losses, the opposition has scored more than 30 points in each match, a total of 136 points. The Titans scored a total of 30 points.
Betting: The Raiders are $1.45 favourites in the match; the Titans are paying $2.85.
Our tip: The Raiders are 11th on the ladder (8-123, +4), the Titans in the wooden spoon spot (7-14, -185). Raiders fans will be pleased the match is being played away from Canberra Stadium, given Canberra has the fifth best away record in the competition (6-4)... and the worst home record. But the Titans have the second worst home record in the competition (3-7).
Canberra is in the top three of the best attacking teams in the NRL... and equal second with the Roosters. Sad to see how that advantage has been lost through poor defence. Only the Knights and Titans have worse defensive records.
Canberra should win this match, given the form, and the team changes for the Titans. Raiders by six.
What they're saying:
Sam Williams: "It's been the story of our year and it's extremely disappointing. Twice in seven days we've lost by two points, and it's really starting to hurt. We've got to move on and get ourselves up for the back end of the season, and finish these last three games with a spring in our step."
Ricky Stuart on the refereeing blunders in the loss to the Sea Eagles: "I'm just so frustrated for my players. I just feel for these players who have put in 10-and-a-half months of absolute focus and commitment for their club, to have had their season ended this way."

I am expecting Shillington to come up with rugby league's first ever own try, somehow, in the 80th minute to hand the Titans the win.

Evenings are a bit chilly
Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

It's definitely warming up but is still capable of getting a bit fresh, particularly if the sea breeze picks up.
